Key takeaway
Treat ChatGPT Ads as a distinct paid placement with its own eligibility, campaign controls and measurement. Start with an explicit learning question. The paid layer
ChatGPT Ads adds a commercial placement to a conversational interface. Understanding that distinction is the first planning decision: a paid campaign buys an opportunity to show an ad. It does not buy the wording of the assistant’s answer.
OpenAI’s published principles keep advertisements visibly separate from organic responses. Advertisers cannot pay to rewrite those responses. Source: OpenAI’s advertising principles.
For an acquisition team, that creates two distinct workstreams. Organic AI visibility concerns how a company and its products are represented in answers. Paid visibility concerns the performance of an advertisement and the journey that follows. A useful strategy can coordinate them, but its reporting must preserve the distinction.
What the platform supports
OpenAI Ads Manager provides campaign creation and management, reporting across campaigns, ad groups and ads, and account administration. Its overview identifies impressions, clicks and spend, with charts and CSV exports. The platform is still described as a beta product. Source: Ads Manager overview.
Advertiser access varies by country. Check the official availability page for the location of the legal entity being billed; account creation alone is not proof of access. Source: Ads Manager availability.
Avoid turning a list of platform controls into a strategy. Before launch, the team should still be able to explain who the offer helps, what action matters, what evidence would justify more spend, and which uncertainty the first campaign resolves.
The strategic brief
We use a decision brief rather than starting with a copied keyword export. This is our planning framework, not an OpenAI account requirement.
- Decision: What is the buyer trying to decide? “Choose a CRM” is a category. “Replace a CRM without interrupting a sales team” is a decision problem.
- Constraint: What makes the decision difficult? Migration risk, implementation time, integrations or total cost may matter more than another feature list.
- Offer: Which specific part of the product solves that problem, and what evidence supports the claim?
- Destination: Where can a visitor evaluate the promise and take a meaningful next step?
- Outcome: What happens after the click, and how will the business recognize quality?
A campaign based on migration might connect a practical migration message to a page with supported data sources, implementation responsibilities and a consultation request. A campaign about general CRM discovery may need a different destination. These are illustrative hypotheses, not observed campaign results.
Measurement before scale
Separate delivery evidence from business evidence. Impressions and clicks tell you whether an ad is serving and receiving a response. They do not tell you whether the business acquired a valuable customer.
Define a primary conversion and its quality criteria before launch. For B2B, a form submission and a sales-accepted opportunity should be separate events. For e-commerce, distinguish an order from net revenue after cancellations and returns. Preserve the same definitions when comparing channels.
Record the baseline, test dates, creative versions, destination versions and budget changes. A team that changes several variables at once may learn that performance moved without learning why. Keep a simple experiment log that states the hypothesis, change, result and unresolved questions.
A practical starting point
A disciplined first test is narrow enough to interpret. Select a commercially important decision, build a coherent set of messages, verify the destination, and set review dates that accommodate the sales cycle.
Do not declare success from a handful of inexpensive clicks. Ask whether the visitors matched the intended need, whether the destination fulfilled the promise, and whether qualified outcomes appeared at an economically defensible cost. When evidence is weak, improve the test or stop it. Novelty is not a reason to keep spending.
Use the readiness assessment to identify foundational gaps, then work through the campaign playbook. If the main uncertainty is relevance, start with how context hints work.
Put the research in context.
